I use gas stove pipes to make my candy canes. I get the elbows for the curve and straight for the rest. Put them together then get some metal primer. I paint them red and white striped. You can also all red and white lights or rope lights if you like. Some times I use them and sometimes not, depends on what I use them for.
If you want even bigger candy canes you can use woodstove stove pipes.

You can also use large PVC pipe and do the same thing. I do like using the copper stove pipes and let them stay out doors all year until they weather and turn that green color and wrap them with white rope lights. They are very rustic looking and would fit in a primitive display. Thanks for the idea rennabelle.
Think normal everyday things from your local hardware store and christmas things when you are planning your display this year.

Since Ive posted this I have seen the candy canes made out of dryer vent piping also. I guess thats what you call it. I didnt get to check it out to see how they made them stand up being that it would fall easily maybe they put some rebar or pcv pipe in it. wouldnt be to hard to figure out.

If I see them again I will get a pic, hopefully I have my camera with me. People are gone and they usually sell at craft fairs. If not to expensive and they are selling those I will try to buy one so I have the pattern.

Lights , I saw a couple using the dryer vent on one of those Christmas light programs. They used clear dryer vent and had lights in them. The candy canes were like 8-9 feet tall. Really kool.

Lightitup,
Here are a couple of pictures of candy canes made with clear dryer vent. These were on HGTV "What's With That Decked Out Christmas House".
