These are my house before it was fully decorated, but it was the only opportunity I had before Christmas to take snow pictures like this, though. Never got around to getting any of it fully decorated. :?

I was researching techniques on taking pictures of snow in Nashville. The first thing everyone says is, "What snow in Nashville?"

I actually forgot I posted this.

Erv, those pictures were taken with a simple Fuji 3.1mp entry level camera that I bought two years ago. No special settings or anything, just point and shoot. I just recently replaced that camera with of all things a Kodak. I never really thought much of their cameras, but I got to play with one and I was impressed. I've been having a lot of fun with it, and it was only $250. You can pick up a Fuji like I had for about $100.

I took these a week or so ago with the new camera. I love night photography, which is something I couldn't do with the old camera.

You are gonna think this is too funny! I replaced my Fuji 3.1 with a Kodak 8.0 mp last October. I love the thing and didnt realize there was such a huge difference until I started printing out all of the old Fuji pictures. The quality is horrible!

Which model did you get? Mine's only 6.1mp, but it's definitely sufficient. The thing that originally impressed me most about the camera I bought was the 12x optical zoom, but it's got a good optical image stabilizer, great battery life, fairly large vivid screen, and the choice between either point and shoot simplicity or complete control over every setting. I know I sound like an ad, but I'm really quite pleased with this camera. A bargain at what they're getting for them.

Not at all, Erv. In fact, if you PM me your email address I'll send you the high resolution one. I'm glad you like it, I froze my arse off trying to get it.

As for a 10mp camera, I haven't really been looking since I just got the Kodak. I wasn't even in the market for one until my girlfriend dropped my Fuji and broke the drive for the zoom. I was mad at the time, but I quickly forgave her when she took me to Best Buy.

I take part of that back. Not 8.0 but 7.1, no wonder I couldn't find the model while I was searching online today! It is the EasyShare 710 and has the 10x optical zoom on it. Mine is like yours, with either the point and shoot or the individual settings. Did you get a dock? If you didn't I strongly suggest picking one up, I love mine!

So is the kodak 10 mp easy to use or is the 6.1 easier to use?

Christy Carol
04-11-2007, 03:54 PM
I am sure it depends on the model. I haven't looked at the 10 because the price kept it at arms length!

No docking station. I have an SD card slot on the front of my computer, so I just pop the card out and transfer that way. I didn't like the Kodak software at all, so I don't even have it installed. Honestly, you couldn't get me to use one of those docks if it were given to me, but I see where some people would find it convenient.

When we went to buy my 612, the saleswoman actually talked me into a 710. It was cheaper, higher resolution, not much difference in zoom, it seemed logical to me... until I got home. I took two pictures and realized why it was cheaper; it had no image stabilizer. I had the camera for all of a half hour before it was exchanged. It's probably not a big deal to someone with steady hands, but I find it invaluable. My hands are about as still as a daffodil in a windstorm. It really works wonders!

I have a 3mp now and it burns pictures directly onto mini cds. I've always really liked this. I can get nearly 2,000 med rez pics per cd.

I remember those! I like SD. It's cheap, fast, and compact. I picked up a 1gb SanDisk card regularly priced at Best Buy for $20. It holds about 250 pictures at the highest resolution, "fine" file compression. At the default compression with the highest resolution, it'll hold over 500. I can't tell the difference between the two, but since I never take more than fifty or so pictures without clearing the card, I leave it at fine.

The Fuji was XD. I wouldn't buy another device that used XD unless I really, really liked it.

Cheaper? Then I need to move north because mine was more than $250!

I don't like the Kodak software either. I only use it to print.

Prices have been dropping regularly on the EasyShare line. For some reason Best Buy's website no longer lists the 710, but a month and a half ago it was just under $220. Kodak's MSRP for the 710 as per their website is $230. My friend that let me try out his 612 almost cried when I told him how much I paid for mine, and he just got his in November.

I just checked Circuit City. On sale for $213, web-only special.

Christy Carol
04-11-2007, 06:58 PM
That really bites, I just got mine in October and it was $299 with the rebate.

I guess its like everything else, if you wait it out the price will drop. Technology moves so fast now our camera's will be obsolete in another 6 months. Just look at cell phones.

dominick
04-11-2007, 07:04 PM
I don't buy into the whole obsolete thing. Yeah, new stuff is being designed and produced all the time, but that doesn't immediately make the stuff you have useless. If Tricia hadn't broken my old Fuji, I'd still be happily snapping away with it, though this Kodak is a huge upgrade. Of course, this comes from someone who thinks the pinnacle of automotive technology was in 1979.

Kinda like with the VCR. I didn't know they took them off the market but they have. My mom and dad do alot of taping off the satellite for watching later and theirs went out. So she called around today looking for one and found out you can only buy the combos now.

They think they are going to force us to spend 300 bucks on a DVD recorder. Nope, not until they are as cheap as a regular DVD player.

Little bit o'searchin. Here you go, KMart has one.

dominick

If she can locate one of those Magnavox's from Target, it's only $60. Browsing Kmart's website, they have other, cheaper models if she can find one.

Christy Carol
04-11-2007, 07:18 PM
Ok, the Target one sounds alot better. Still amazes me a VCR alone is now more expensive than a DVD player. You can pick up a DVD at Wal-Mart now for 29 bucks.

dominick
04-11-2007, 07:20 PM
The DVD players have fewer moving parts and are cheaper to manufacture. It is kind of amazing, though, that they went from being something too expensive for most people to afford to being cheap enough to be disposable.

Christy, I believe that's correct. I've never been into Fords, though. This is my little Texas gem that I picked up a couple years ago. No rust!! Unfortunately, though, a pickup truck decided to make a blind U turn in front of me in a 50mph zone. I hit the truck hard enough to snap one of it's wheels off the hub and break it's rear axle. The truck's frame was also split where the bed met the cab.

We all walked away from it. The worst injury was from me riding with me knee right below and behind of the window crank. The truck took the worst of it by far, I actually drove the car home from the accident.

The Grenada was the pinnacle (if by pinnacle you mean the worst) of the late 70s boring vehicles. I'm sure you could have gotten them with pinstripes and a hot 351W, but the performance days were over as far as we were concerned. When 350 Corvettes were the fastest you could get, we knew times were tough.

dominick
04-12-2007, 01:54 PM
The late 70s sure did produce some lack-luster performing cars, but a lot of them are still ideal platforms for whatever you wish to do. Take my car for example, a 1979 Chevy Malibu. From the factory, it came with a 135hp 305 V8 with a Quadrajet... far from impressive. However, it's a relatively light car (right at around 3200lbs) with a very sturdy chassis that can accommodate almost any drivetrain GM ever produced. Right before the accident I started gathering pieces for a temporary swap. After tossing some new panels on it (still needs a lot of attention), we put my mild 350/TH350 in it. According to the engine dyno sheet, it's only making about 330bhp and around 390lb/ft torque. It may not be burning up the streets, but it's a fun car to drive.

LOL!! I am not complaining...but without looking, can you guys remember what this thread was actually about?

I didn't until I looked!!

Now back to the car, I knew what it was because my best friend's (the one that now lives in Alaska) mom drove one until the wheels fell off and it use to embarrass her to no end. Now mom drives a Jeep and it makes Donna so mad she cant see straight!

LIU, I'm glad you're happy with the camera (sorry I'm so slow to respond). I got my sister to buy one, too. For those that are looking, now is the time to buy if you can find them. They're being clearanced out in favor of the 10.1mp (I think that's it) and the new stuff Kodak has coming in. Even the 10.1 is under $300 now.
