For some reason I want to say yes Lilly. I had an great aunt that lived in the north for many years and it seems I recall her saying that is what it was called up north.

Yes,here it's johnny cake or cornbread. Depending on which generation you were raised in. :P

:x Which generation? Does that make me old or young?
:-) If you can't get real Maple Syrup, Aunt Jemima or Mrs. Butterworth's is the next best thing.

BF loves to take my cornbread and crumble it up in a glass of buttermilk and eat it with fork and then drink the leftover milk.
Old southern tradition I could never get into.

I just found this picture and wanted to share it. No real holiday significance. Odd that on a book about good foods they are eating these babies. Where is the governmental nutritionist? I need to pick your brains a bit here. I was watching a Cheerios commercial and a guy was surrounded by them, all piled up in neat stacks. I had an immediate flashback to a book I read when I was a kid about a man who was making donuts and ended up surrounded by thousands of them in piles. I always thought what a lucky man he was. Can you remember that story? To help your mental picture, they were just plain donuts, not frosted or anything.

My mom did make donuts, but I'm not sure if she plopped them out of a donut maker or rolled them and made the circles by hand. When she bought donuts, and that wasn't often, she always bought boxes with three kinds - sugar coated, cinnamon coated and plain. Later, in my late teens, my older sister worked at Mister Donut. That's when we discovered frosting and filling and that's also when we lost sight of our shoes.

Yup we did. Although we didn't make up our own batter, our grandmaw taught us to use can biscuits with the middles cut out and then fry then in a pan of hot oil. After they were done, we would powder then with powdered sugar or drizzle them with sugar glaze. They were the best!!!!

After my three hour stint in the dentist chair, during which time I came across the news of the shootings, I decided to go to Wally World for some power steering fluid and came across their cinnamon rolls. Four for $1.50. I needed some comfort food as I was pretty much a walking zombie (Is there any other kind?). I have one left.

Sounds yummy, I will roll them in cinnamon sugar. Dentist here I come.
A johnny cake is the almost the same thing as sweet corn bread. The batter is almost the same but johnny cakes are thin and fried in a pan like pan cakes.
