No corner left undecorated
Whenever I visit my parents, I'm always amazed at how "homey" the atmosphere is. There's never a corner left undecorated ~ a few items remain year round with modifications for different holidays of course the most significant change in the decor comes in early December.
In the main floor powder room you will find, antique-like canisters (some that are antique), Poetry Books, Magazines (some old ones), Sears Wish Book, a few storybooks about mice and if you dig down deeper into the basket, you will find a story or two about Christmas. There’s potpourri scattered loosely from a small round coloured box with a floral design (the fake poop in the bed pan has been removed - fear not or fear more, it has been replaced with a horrid plant). There is a lovely ceramic (two-piece) water fountain with old mussels (a shellfish of salt and fresh waters) in it - we call it her mussel plant.
There are some knick-knack mice, hand held Poker and Black Jack (where you could spend the majority of time trying to win back points for the person who used the game before your visit), an artificial plant, hand towels (to suit various holidays throughout the year) air fresheners, a lovely plague of Pooh Bear and Piglet brushing their teeth over a sink. The famous cats playing poker and smoking huge cigarettes picture (huge matted thing) that was hanging on the wall above the toilet has been replaced by a winter oil painting that my father did.
During the Christmas holidays, you will find the powder room takes on a more seasonal appearance - don’t eat the candy canes - trust me on that one, “They’re candles! Don’t you know?!”. The toilet paper is always Christmassy - I just cannot describe it because this is such a friendly forum.
She decorates with boughs along the banister and music notes on a scroll that wrapped around the boughs with gold trim and black writing on an antique-white paper.
My mother makes a holiday display in the window above their custom-made TV Hutch. The window is higher than normal. For Christmas my mom puts bricks and things inside because the ledge is wider than normal. My mom drapes fake snow and a smidge of glitter over the strategically placed bricks to make the scene look like rolling hills.
Once the snow is in place, she places selected ornaments into her display. She uses several poly-resin deers, a Santa in one corner with a sack of toys and an Angel in the other corner with some boughs set up to look like a mini Christmas trees.
Sometimes when you look at the window you think it is level with the snow outside - she really does a great job with it.
At Easter and Thanksgiving she decorates the window space to reflect those holidays too.
On each step leading upstairs, she has one or two snowpeople or Santa's guiding the way to places where "visions of sugar plums can dance in your head" (about seventeen stairs).
Whenever guests come to stay overnight, my mom puts something on their pillows - just like a fancy hotel. My brother and his friend stayed with my husband and I one year and I borrowed a page from her "consider yourself at home book" (not a real book, of course) and placed Christmas Hershey Kisses, mini Christmas Beanies, and the Reindeer that shot out Glossette Raisins on their pillows.
:-o I don't recall my mom ever putting the Reindeer out for her guests. I'm surprised we haven't had more company over the years.
:-D Go ahead a borrow a few ideas from my mom while you are making decorating plans for Christmas 2007!
