How about seasonings in a jar with a recipe.
Creole Seasoning
3 tablespoons onion powder
3 tablespoons garlic powder
1 tablespoon ground red pepper
1 tablespoon paprika
1 tablespoon parsley flakes
1 tablespoon black pepper
1. Combine all ingredients in small bowl; mix well. Pour mixture into 1/2 pint food storage jar with tight-fittling lid.
2. Seal jar. Cover lid with fabric circle if desired. Attach a gift tag and fabric to jar with raffia or ribbon.
Add a recipe:
Hush puppies
1 quart vegetable oil
2 cups yellow cornmeal
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon plus 1 1/2 teaspoons creole seasoning
1 teaspoon each sugar and baking powder
1 teaspoon each baking soda and salt
2 eggs
1 cup butter milk
1/4 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
1. Heat oil in large heavy saucepan over medium-high heat to 375* F on deep-fat thermometer.*
2. Meanwhile, combine all dry ingredients in large bowls.
Beat eggs in medium bowl; stir in buttermilk and butter. Stir egg mixture into cornmeal mixture just until dry ingredients are moistened.
3. Carefully drop spoonfuls of batter into oil in 3 or 4 batches. Fry 3 to 5 minutes or until browned and cooked through. Remove with slotted spoon to paper towels.
Serve immediately
* Keep the oil temperature as close to 375* F as possible by raising or lowering the heat. Do not leave hot oil unattended.

The following is a different idea on Gifts in a Jar as the cakes are ready to eat:
Apple Jar Cake
2/3 Cup Shortening
1/2 teaspoon Baking powder
3 1/3 Cups Sugar
2 teaspoons Baking soda
4 Eggs
1 1/2 teaspoons Salt
2 Cups Applesauce
1 teaspoon Cinnamon
3 1/3 Cups Flour
1 teaspoon Cloves
1 Cup Raisins
1/2 Cup Pecans (chopped)
Yield: 8 servings. Grease 8 WIDE-MOUTH pint canning jars with melted shortening. Use a brush and avoid getting grease on the jar rims. Cream shortening and sugar. Beat in eggs and applesauce. Sift together the dry ingredients and blend them into the applesauce mixture. Add the raisins and nuts and divide the batter evenly between 8 widemouth pint jars. The jars will be more than half full. Bake open jars about 60 minutes in an oven at 325 degrees. When done, quickly remove one hot har at a time and clean its sealing edge. Immediately apply and firmly tighten a two-piece widemouth canning lid. The lid will form a vacuum seal as the jar cools. Jars of cooled bread may be stored on the pantry shelf with other canned foods or may be placed in a freezer. The bread is safe to eat as long as jars remain vacuum sealed and free of mold growth.
Note: The jar tops can be embellished with Christmas fabric cut to fit generously over the lids when screwed into place. Tie off with colorful ribbon and gift tag.
No recipe needed as cake has already been baked and ready to eat.
If there is an interest in this type gift in a jar, just let me know as I have another to share.:(;

I am thinking about doing some "gift in a jar" this year and was googling some recipes. I have never done anything like this before and am going to stick to cakes and dry things lol. Does anyone have some ideas or things that you do that are easy?

I have read and have a friend who mixes up cake batter and fills it up about half way bakes it and you put the seal and lid on the pint canning jars and viola cake in a jar to be given away. I have been given hot coco recipe in a jar before and loved it.
